A 7-day surf trip to Costa Rica costs the surf, plus everything around it. The surf is the part we can price exactly, because we sell it. The rest changes with the season, your flight and how you like to travel, so we give you ranges and say clearly which numbers are estimates.

The short version: the surf for a week is $380 to about $1,700+ per person depending on the format you choose. Add flights, a room, food and a ride, and most beginners land between a budget and a comfortable trip. Skip to the three trip budgets for the totals.

What Does the Surf Part Cost?

Lessons are $50 to $90 per person, per 90-minute session, plus 13% IVA at checkout. The board, leash and rash guard are included, so there is nothing to rent.

FormatPriceBest for
Group lesson$50 per personTight budgets, social learners
Semi-private lesson$60 per personCouples and friends, more attention
Private lesson$90 per personFastest progress, one-on-one coaching
Surf packageFrom $175 (3 lessons), $295 (5), $380 (7)A week of consecutive days at a lower price per lesson

Package prices are per person, for semi-private lessons with a minimum of two people, plus IVA. A 7-day package is the cheapest way to surf every day of the trip. For a deeper look at what each lesson includes, read how much surf lessons cost in Tamarindo.

What About the Surf Camp?

The Tamarindo surf camp is priced per room, not per person. A 7-night stay starts around $1,700 for the cheapest room and goes up with the room size. The camp includes your own room 20 m from the beach, a coached session on each full day, a guided surf trip and the Liberia airport transfer. Meals are not included.

The exact total for your dates and group appears in the booking calendar before you pay, so we do not quote a single number for every room here.

The Rest of the Budget (Estimates)

These are not our prices. They are ranges we hear from students and see around Tamarindo, and they move with the season. Check current rates before you book.

  • Flights: the biggest swing. Liberia (LIR) is the closest airport, about an hour and a half from Tamarindo. San José (SJO) often has cheaper flights but adds a long drive or a domestic hop. Our Costa Rica surf trip guide compares the two.
  • Lodging: from a hostel bed or a simple room to a hotel or villa. This is the line that separates a budget trip from a comfortable one.
  • Food: Tamarindo is a tourist town, so restaurant meals cost more than most visitors expect. Cooking some meals from the supermarket is the easiest way to cut this line.
  • Getting there: a shared shuttle from San José runs about $45 to $65 per person. From Liberia the trip is much shorter. How to get from San José to Tamarindo lists every option with times and costs.
  • Afternoon activities: optional, but most people add one or two tours, from a boat ride in the estuary to a sunset sail.

Three Ways to Build the Trip

Everyone’s flight is different, so these compare what you spend once you are on the ground, with the surf at real prices and the other lines as the estimates above.

  1. Budget: a group or semi-private 7-day package (from $380 plus IVA), a hostel or simple room, groceries for most meals, no tours.
  2. Comfortable: semi-private lessons for most days, a private lesson to unlock your pop-up, a hotel room near the beach, restaurants and one or two tours.
  3. All-in: the surf camp, with the room, daily coaching, a guided surf trip and the airport transfer in one booking. Add meals and any tours you want.

How to Spend Less Without Surfing Less

  • Go in the green season. September and October are the cheapest months for flights and rooms, and mornings are usually clear. See the best time to surf Tamarindo for what to expect.
  • Book a package, not single lessons. The price per lesson drops, and you lock in your surf days.
  • Bring a friend. Semi-private lessons are $60 per person, and a shared room splits the lodging line.
  • Fly into Liberia. You skip the long road transfer.
  • Cook some meals. It is the easiest line in the budget to cut.

What You Do Not Need to Pay For

Costa Rica surf trips feel expensive when people budget for gear they never use. You do not need your own board, since lessons include it, and the water is warm all year, so you do not need a wetsuit. Pack light with our surf trip packing list and skip the airline board fee.

Is It Worth It?

A week gives you time to repeat, and repetition is what makes surfing click. Five to six days in the water is usually enough to go from your first lesson to riding waves on your own. That is why most of the beginners we coach book a week rather than a single lesson.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 7-day surf trip to Costa Rica cost?

It depends mostly on where you sleep and how you learn. The surf part is easy to pin down: a week of lessons runs from $380 per person with a 7-day package to about $1,700 or more per room for the all-in surf camp. Flights, lodging and food are on top of lessons and vary with season and taste.

Is Costa Rica expensive for a surf trip?

It costs more than most surf destinations in Central America, but the surf itself is not the expensive part. Lessons are $50 to $90, boards are included and you do not need a wetsuit. Lodging, restaurants and tours are where budgets grow.

What is the cheapest time to take a surf trip to Costa Rica?

The green season, May to November, with September and October the cheapest months. Waves are still surfable, mornings are usually clear and flights and rooms cost less than in the dry season.

Do I need to rent a surfboard on a surf trip?

Not if you take lessons. Our lessons include the board, leash and rash guard. If you surf on your own later in the week, local shops rent boards by the day.

Is it cheaper to book a surf package or separate lessons?

A package. Packages start at $175 per person for three lessons (semi-private, minimum two people), which brings the price per lesson down compared with booking each one alone.
