What to Expect

Your First Surf Lesson in Tamarindo, Step by Step

Never surfed before? Here's exactly how your 90-minute lesson works — every beginner goes through these three phases.

1

Safety briefing & dry-land practice

Arrive a few minutes early to get fitted with a soft-top board and rash guard. Your instructor runs a beach briefing — ocean safety, how to read waves, the leash, and surf etiquette — then walks you through the pop-up on the sand until the movement feels natural.

2

Catching your first waves

We start in waist-deep whitewater, the safest place to feel the board glide. Your certified instructor stays right beside you, helps you into each wave, and calls out when to pop up. Most beginners are riding whitewater during this first lesson — and if you don't stand up at all, your next lesson is on us.

3

Feedback & photos

Back on the beach your instructor gives honest feedback on what to work on next, so you know how to keep progressing. Action photos of your session are available on request to take the memories home.

No Experience Needed

Surf Lessons Built for First-Timers

"I'm not athletic." "I'm scared of the ocean." "Am I too old?" The honest answer is no — the only thing between you and your first wave is showing up.

What you don't need

  • Athletic ability beyond walking up a beach
  • To be a strong swimmer — beginner lessons stay in waist-deep water
  • Any prior yoga, balance training, or preparation
  • Your own surfboard, wetsuit, or gear — it’s all included

What you do need

  • A swimsuit you can move in
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • About 90 minutes of energy in your legs
  • A willingness to fall off and get back up

Contact Us on WhatsApp
Do I need experience to take surf lessons?
Not at all! Our surf lessons are designed for complete beginners. Our certified instructors will guide you step by step from land training to catching your first waves.
How long is a surf lesson?
All our surf lessons are 90 minutes. This includes a safety briefing on the beach and time in the water with your instructor.
What is the best option to start?
For beginners, we recommend a private lesson for the fastest progress, or a group lesson for a social experience at a lower price.
What can I expect on a regular day?
Your instructor will meet you at the beach, provide all equipment, give a safety briefing, and guide you through your first waves.
What sets your surf camp apart?
We are a local surf school with certified instructors who know Tamarindo's waves inside and out. Small groups, personalized attention, and a true pura vida experience.
Is equipment included?
Yes! Surfboard, foam guard, and all necessary equipment are included in every lesson.
The bigger questions travelers actually ask
Is Tamarindo really good for learning to surf, or is it too touristy now?
Tamarindo is busy, especially from December to April — but that is not the same as a bad place to learn. The reason it is popular is exactly why it works for beginners: a sandy bottom with no rocks or reef, warm water year-round, and forgiving, slow-breaking waves, which is a rare combination worldwide. The beach stretches over a kilometre, and beginner lessons happen in waist-deep whitewater away from where experienced surfers compete for sets, so you are not fighting anyone for space.
I am in my 40s with no athletic background — can I still learn to surf?
Yes, and your age matters far less than you think. We regularly teach people who have not exercised in years, and the hard part of a first lesson is mental, not physical. A realistic timeline: most students stand up and ride whitewater in their first 90-minute lesson. Over a few lessons you start paddling for green waves with more consistency. If you feel nervous, a private or semi-private lesson lets you progress faster with full instructor attention.
Should I learn to surf in Tamarindo, Nosara, or Santa Teresa?
All three are good, but they suit different trips. Tamarindo is the easiest to reach (about an hour from Liberia airport), has the most services, and beginner-friendly waves — it just gets crowded. Nosara has a yoga and wellness scene, a longer rough-road drive, and slightly punchier waves. Santa Teresa is the most off-the-beaten-path with bigger waves that are less ideal for first-timers, and it is the hardest to reach. For pure beginners on a 5–7 day trip, Tamarindo wins on logistics and ease — start here and explore another town on your next trip.
I am scared of being held underwater by big waves — is Tamarindo gentle enough?
Yes. This is exactly why Tamarindo appears on so many "best places to learn" lists. Beginner lessons happen in waist-deep whitewater — the foam after waves have already broken — so you are never out where the bigger forces are, and if you fall, you fall in water you can stand up in. If your fear of the ocean is more general, book a private lesson; having a certified instructor right beside you removes most of the anxiety, and many students say the fear fades after the first few waves.
