Getting from San José to Tamarindo is one of the most common travel questions we get at Pura Vida Surf School. You have four realistic options — each with different tradeoffs on cost, comfort, and flexibility. Here's exactly what we tell our students.

The Route at a Glance

Tamarindo sits on the northwest coast of Costa Rica in Guanacaste province — about 280 km from San José. The main driving route takes Highway 1 north toward Liberia, then heads south along the coast. Most of the road is paved and in good condition. The last 10 km into Tamarindo is a dirt road — bumpy but manageable in any car.

Liberia Airport (LIR) is the closest international airport — just 1.5 hours from Tamarindo. If you're flying from the US, check flights into Liberia directly before defaulting to San José. It's often cheaper and saves you 3+ hours of ground travel.

Our Recommendation

Solo traveler or couple?

Book a shared shuttle. Interbus and Monkey Ride pick you up at your hotel in San José and drop you right in Tamarindo for around $50. You don't have to navigate, find parking, or worry about the dirt road. Best value for the stress saved.

Family or group of 3+?

Rent a car. When you split the cost across 3–4 people, it becomes cheaper than shuttles and gives you the freedom to explore Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, or stop at a local soda along the way. Use Google Maps — the GPS works well on all major routes.

Short on time?

Take the domestic flight with SANSA. It's 45 minutes vs 4+ hours on the ground. If you only have 5–7 days in Costa Rica, the time saved is worth the extra cost.

Pro tip: fly into Liberia instead

Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Liberia is only 1.5 hours from Tamarindo. Many US carriers fly direct to Liberia — check before booking a San José connection. A short shuttle from LIR costs around $30–$40 per person and saves you half a day.

Once you arrive — book your surf lessons
