Surf lessons at Playa Grande with Pura Vida Surf School cost $50 per person in a group, $60 per person semi-private, and $90 for a private session. Playa Grande sits just north of Tamarindo in Guanacaste, about 10 minutes by boat or 30 minutes by road. It is a longer, more powerful beach break than Tamarindo with far fewer surfers in the water, which makes it the natural next step once you can already stand up in whitewater. Every lesson is 90 minutes and includes the surfboard, rash guard, and an ISA-certified instructor.

Should you surf Playa Grande or Tamarindo?

We teach at both. Honest answer: they suit different people, and picking the wrong one costs you a morning.

Getting there

    Tell us where you are staying

    If you are already in Playa Grande or Palm Beach Estates, we meet you there. If you are in Tamarindo, we sort the crossing.

    Boat or road

    The estuary crossing takes about 10 minutes. By road it is roughly 30 minutes around through Matapalo.

  3. 3

    Hotel pickup if you want it

    We can collect you from your hotel for an agreed fee that depends on where you are. Ask when you book.

Do you teach surf lessons at Playa Grande?
Yes. Playa Grande is one of our two service areas alongside Tamarindo. We run lessons there with the same certified instructors, the same 90-minute format, and the same equipment included.
How do I get to Playa Grande from Tamarindo?
It is about 10 minutes by boat across the Tamarindo estuary, or roughly 30 minutes by road around through Matapalo. We can also pick you up from your hotel for an agreed fee, so just tell us where you are staying when you book.
Is Playa Grande good for complete beginners?
It can be, but Tamarindo is usually the better first lesson. Playa Grande is a longer, more powerful beach break, which is exactly what makes it great once you can already catch whitewater. If it is your very first time on a board, we normally start you in Tamarindo and bring you to Playa Grande as you progress.
What does a surf lesson at Playa Grande cost?
The same as anywhere we teach: $50 per person for a group lesson, $60 per person for semi-private, and $90 for a private one-on-one session. Every lesson is 90 minutes with surfboard, rash guard, and a certified instructor included. Hotel pickup is available for an agreed fee.
When is the best time to surf Playa Grande?
Mid to low tide works best, and very high tide is worth avoiding. We schedule every session around the daily tide window, so check the Tamarindo tide chart or just tell us your dates and we will pick the best time for you.
Is Playa Grande inside a national park?
Yes. Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, an important leatherback turtle nesting beach. Surfing is permitted, and we follow the park rules on access and beach use during nesting season.
