Surf lessons at Playa Grande with Pura Vida Surf School cost $50 per person in a group, $60 per person semi-private, and $90 for a private session. Playa Grande sits just north of Tamarindo in Guanacaste, about 10 minutes by boat or 30 minutes by road. It is a longer, more powerful beach break than Tamarindo with far fewer surfers in the water, which makes it the natural next step once you can already stand up in whitewater. Every lesson is 90 minutes and includes the surfboard, rash guard, and an ISA-certified instructor.

Should you surf Playa Grande or Tamarindo?

We teach at both. Honest answer: they suit different people, and picking the wrong one costs you a morning.

Come to Playa Grande if

  • You are already standing up in whitewater and want unbroken waves

First time on a board but set on Playa Grande? It is doable — we just book it around the mid-to-low tide window, which is when the wave is gentle enough to learn on. Tamarindo simply does not require that planning, which is why we point most first-timers there by default.

    Tell us where you are staying

    If you are already in Playa Grande or Palm Beach Estates, we meet you there. If you are in Tamarindo, we sort the crossing.

    Boat or road

    The estuary crossing takes about 10 minutes. By road it is roughly 30 minutes around through Matapalo.

    Hotel pickup if you want it

    We can collect you from your hotel for an agreed fee that depends on where you are. Ask when you book.

Do you teach surf lessons at Playa Grande?
Yes. Playa Grande is one of the beaches we serve, along with Tamarindo, Playa Langosta, Playa Flamingo, Brasilito, Potrero, and the wider Cabo Velas area. We run lessons there with the same certified instructors, the same 90-minute format, and the same equipment included.
How do I get to Playa Grande from Tamarindo?
It is about 10 minutes by boat across the Tamarindo estuary, or roughly 30 minutes by road around through Matapalo. We can also pick you up from your hotel for an agreed fee, so just tell us where you are staying when you book.
Is Playa Grande good for complete beginners?
Yes, as long as the lesson is timed to the mid-to-low tide window, which is when the wave is gentle enough to learn on. Outside that window it gets more powerful, which is why Tamarindo is our default recommendation for first-timers: it does not require that tide planning. If you want your first lesson at Playa Grande specifically, tell us your dates and we will schedule it for the right tide.
What does a surf lesson at Playa Grande cost?

Is Playa Grande inside a national park?
Yes. Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, an important leatherback turtle nesting beach. Surfing is permitted, and we follow the park rules on access and beach use during nesting season.
